No matter the size of the municipality, community leaders are all interested in building strong vibrant local communities. Businesses, and the jobs they create, are critical components of strong economies. The Business Retention and Expansion Committee committee works to strengthen our existing business base in Olds, and works towards ensuring an environment conducive to future business that will enhance our quality of life. This committee serves as a management tool to help community partners contend with issues surrounding community revitalization. We believe this process can develop a framework for moving Olds forward by assisting local businesses to expand. Development practitioners and studies indicate that a much greater economic impact can be achieved if communities focus and take care of existing businesses.
Strategies such as business recruitment, strategic partnerships, tourism development, and downtown revitalization are often implemented as part of an overall economic development strategy.
Building relationships with the business community through a structured and systematic approach can lad to quick economic development wins, as well as more effective economic development and planning strategies. To this end, the Business Retention & Expansion Committee began their process in 2004 to survey Chamber of Commerce members and business owners. They were then able to introduce a strategy of development that addressed business owners' priorities according to the survey results.
Now, this group of volunteers is currently involved in the promotion and marketing of the downtown core, and branding the business community in this area as the new Uptowne Olds. With a fresh new logo and plans for restoring many of our downtown commercial building storefronts, this group is well on its way. The result will be a renewed storefront, increased traffic and business, and the satisfaction of being part of a community-wide effort to promote and strengthen Uptowne Olds!
