Olds Physician Attraction & Retention Committee

Vision of Success:
The community of Olds and district will have the ongoing services of the full complement of physicians required to meet the health care needs of its people.
In cooperation with Alberta Health Services and the Olds physicians, the Olds Physician Attraction & Retention Committee will work to attract and retain physicians and their families for the purpose of providing ongoing medical services to all members of the community and surrounding region.
The Olds Physician Attraction & Retention Committee is a subcommittee of and reports to the Olds Institute for Community Lifestyles Committee one of the Pillar Committees of the Olds Institute for Community & Regional Development.
The Olds Physician Attraction & Retention Committee will strive to work:
- in a spirit of cooperation
- transparently, and
We will attempt to keep our membership between 8 – 10, with emphasis on having a good cross section of our community’s population. Representatives from our Medical Clinic(s) are deemed to be significantly essential to our success and will be ex-officio members of this committee.
- Ensure the benefits of Olds and rural living are communicated to perspective physicians
- Develop actions with assistance from Olds physicians to assist in retaining physicians and their families
- Develop and manage a realistic annual budget to fund our actions.
- Where possible attempt to influence Municipal and Provincial governments on the need to support Rural & Family Medicine.
Ensure the benefits of Olds and rural living are communicated to prospective physicians
Action 1: Become aware of our community informational material sources for the purpose of distribution to prospective new comers. September 6, 2011
Action 2: Develop information which addresses specific interests of prospective physicians, residents and medical students.
Action 3: Provide information packages as requested to prospective physicians, residents and medical students.
Action 4: Host tours of Olds and area for prospective physicians, residents and medical students.
Develop actions which will assist in the retention of physicians and their families.
Action 1: Work with Olds physicians and or their representatives to identify how the town of Olds can support physicians by inviting physicians and spouses to provide us with information which would support their living and working in Olds.
Action 2: Implement the above suggestions as much as possible. If suggestions are not possible with the Olds Physician Attraction & Retention Committee resources, the committee will request assistance from the Community Lifestyles Committee.
Where possible attempt to influence Municipal and Provincial governments on the need to support Rural & Family Medicine
Action 1: Lobby the Alberta Government about the need to increase spaces in the Faculties of Medicine for Family Medicine by scheduling a meeting with our new MLA to brief the MLA with the history and mandate of the Olds Physician Attraction & Retention Committee
Action 2: Develop and submit a proposal for the universities to increase spaces in the Faculties for Family and Rural Medicine.
Action 3: Maintain an active presence on the Ad Hoc Committee of the Town of Olds for the purpose of influencing the Town on opportunities for their support of the retention of our Physicians. (Completed September 1, 2011)
Develop and manage a realistic annual budget to fund our actions.
Action 1: Develop an annual budget to implement the above strategies.
Action 2: Present the recommended budget to the Olds Institute Community Lifestyle Committee for approval.
Action 1: Whenever our membership numbers get down to 6 members we will advertise for new members through the local media and at public events as they occur.
